“Z” Award

The “Z” Award represents the passion for and dedication to music that Joe Zawinul put into every note he ever played or wrote. The winner of the “Z” Award is a European Union student who demonstrates excellence in five judged categories: performance, presence, originality, interpretation, and musicianship. This student also shows a passion for music while both performing and discussing his or her craft. The judging committee looks for that spark in a student’s eye that shows the world that music is part of what makes them who they are. This student is awarded the opportunity to participate in the Joe Zawinul International Music Exchange Program, a 10-day all-expenses-paid musical and cultural intensive experience in Los Angeles, California.

Spirit Award

The winner of the Spirit Award is a European Union student who exhibits an unparalleled passion for music. This award is about the student’s musical growth, not only in theoretical knowledge of his or her instrument, but in the acquisition of professional skills that are required to have a career in music. The recipient of the Spirit Award must exhibit outstanding musicianship and be a shining example of the work ethic required to continue learning his/her craft, constantly re-invent his/her playing, and in spite of bumps in the road, keep stepping outside of one’s comfort zone. The Joe Zawinul Spirit Award is awarded every two years to a student that is a member of the Joe Zawinul Musikschule in Gumpoldskirchen.  This student must also have previously applied for the “Z” Award to be eligible for the Spirit Award.
